"Definitely the best driving school in Blackpool and would recommend to anyone! Donna is very helpful and Simon is a great driving instructor, I would not have been able to pass without them. Thanks for helping me to pass my test just before I went away, looking forward to a lesson on the motorway when I come back!"

How to Choose your Driving School

Choosing your Driving Instructor.

Telephone  01253 320080

Choosing a driving school is probably the most important decision that you will have to make and can be a daunting prospect. A quick look in the Yellow Pages shows over dozens of Driving schools in the Blackpool and Fylde Coast area alone so how do you go about identifying the one to suit your needs?

The following sections detail some of the ways that people make their choice.

Essential Tips for Passing 1st Time

Essential tips for passing your test first time

Get as much practice as you can!

According to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), the best way to pass your test first time is to get at least 47 hours of professional instruction with a good driving instructor and at least 20 hours of supervised private practice.

Thinking of getting help from a family member or friend? IMPORTANT: whoever accompanies you on your private driving practice must be at least 21 years of age and have held a full driving licence for at least three years. If your accompanying driver does not meet these conditions, YOU risk a fine and three penalty points on your driving licence. Your accompanying driver also needs to know the following stuff

Responsibilities

As your supervisor, they're technically in charge of the vehicle, with the following responsibilities:

  • No drink, drugs, speeding or using mobile phones.
  • They're responsible for the condition of the car (brakes, steering, tyres, etc.).
  • The car must be properly insured for both them and you.
  • 'L' plates must be displayed front and back.
  • They must be over 21 years old and have had their full driving licence for at least 3 years.
More advice

  • Move from an empty car park to quiet roads to everyday driving.
  • When ready, move on to evening and wet-weather driving.
  • Your parent needs to be patient, no matter how much your driving scares them!
FACT: the more you practice, the lower your risk of a crash!

Learner drivers in New Zealand who practised for 120 hours reduced their chances of crashing by 40% compared to those who'd only done 50 hours of training.

FACT

Nine out of 10 learners who pass their practical test first time are taught by a DSA-licensed approved driving instructor (ADI).

Things to think about when you choose an instructor ...

  • Do you want a male or female instructor?
  • Will you always have the same instructor and/or car?
  • Can one of your parents come along later to pick up 'supervisor' tips?
  • How much emphasis do they put on safety?
  • A 'green badge' driving instructor is a fully-qualified Driving Standards Agency-licensed ADI, whereas a 'pink badge' instructor is still in training

A new rumour appears to be developing that motorway driving and night driving is to be incorporated into the driving test.

This would be impractical. Learners will never be allowed on a motorway until they pass the practical driving test.
If night driving were included in the test, it would require the tests to be conducted after 11pm in the long summer days.

When you pass your test and if you are anxious about motorway or night driving, please have a few extra lessons with your driving Instructor, or better still, have a go at the Pass Plus course.

The current Laws in the UK

You cannot start to drive a car until your provisional driving licence has been accepted and in your possession. If you are in receipt of the higher rate of disability, you can start to learn how to drive when you reach your 16th Birthday otherwise you will have to wait until your 17th Birthday.

Is your Driving Instructor Fully Qualified or just a trainee?

Does it really matter?

The first thing to check, is your Driving Instructor on the official register of Driving Instructors

Driving Instructors have to display a licence in the window of their vehicle when they are charging for driving tuition.

A fully qualified Instructor will have a green badge and a trainee Instructor will show a Pink badge.

Driving Instructors have to go through a very stringent qualification process which involves taking a three part exam.Only when they demonstrate that they have a sound understanding of instructual techniques will they be awarded with the green badge.

A driving Instructor who has a Pink badge, will still be in the process of qualifying for the final exam.

Approximately 75% of these trainees do not go on to qualify and the official pass rate is about 25%.

Some of the countries largest driving schools such as BSM,LDC Learner driver centre,New driver, Red and Learners U.K. use trainees and will generally charge the same rate for their services.

It's important to note that these trainee's have only passed their theory and practical driving test's and will be preparing for the all important test of instructual ability at your expense.

Before you commit and book your lessons ASK THE QUESTION will my driving Instructor be fully qualified.

For your protection!

Before a person can be accepted on to the official register of driving Instructors they must complete a criminal records check to establish if they will be safe to work with the general public and in particular under eighteen's.

How much should a driving instructor charge for driving lessons?

The price of a driving lesson is only one of the factors that you should consider when making your choice of driving instructor.

It's not like buying a new pair of jeans where several retailers will all have the same product and you just shop around for the best deal.

Driving instructors can not be compared like for like. They may drive around in similar tution vehicles but the instruction they give can vary enormously. Some driving instructors once qualified never take any additional training to keep up with new developements. Can you imagine a Doctor or Nurse never taking further training.

Other driving instructors take part in CPD which is continued professional developement, this ensure's that they are at the fore front of the many changes taking place with in the industry.

People often look for a driving Instructor who is" good and cheap"unfortunately the two rarely go together as many have found to their cost, but only after wasting hundreds of pounds.

Value for money.

There are driving Instructors who are reliable, have first class teaching skills, years of experience ,high pass rates and many satisfied customers. These type of Instructors stay busy for a very good reason, not because they are the cheapest in town but because their customers learn in fewer lessons and benefit from top teaching skills.

On the hand some driving Instructors still teach old methods and have poor customer service skills.
